Kaushikbhai Parmar's Exprience
By occupation, Kaushikbhai Parmar is an agricultural labor from Vasviliya village, located in Viramgam district that forms part of the Saurashtra heartland in Gujarat. Married to Bhavanaben with five children (three daughters and two sons), he just manages to eke out living round the year by supplementing his income mending shoes when his services are not required on the farms. As they say in this part of rural India, “Kausikbhai’s family has been living here since seven generations”! In spite of being so well entrenched in the social milieu, he still very aptly represents that class of rural India which lies at the lowest rung of the Indian economy ladder. In other words, he is a sole earning member looking after a large family through a set of livelihoods that offers neither any security nor any sustainability.

On the contrary, despite the social consolidation, Kaushikbhai remains as vulnerable as ever to the ever-changing context around him. Of late, however, what has brought some succor to his struggles has been the RSBY and Kaushikbhai does not miss a chance to profusely appreciate the same. His daughter, Reshma, has been one of the latest beneficiaries of the scheme. She was suffering from very much pain of ear and not able to take breath also.

It was one of the village level health workers who had apprised Kaushikbhai of the scheme about two years ago and had managed to convince him to get one RSBY insurance card. He did not use it to avail any medical facilities or services last year. When Reshama was diagnosed with Septoplasty + Functional Endoscopic Sinus , he found to his dismay that her name was not included as a beneficiary. Without loosing heart, he acquainted himself of the procedures to have a name added in the card and went on to rectify the error. He had to undergo some discomfort as well in the process but eventually saw it through.

As he says,” My family and I will be eternally grateful to the “Bima Yojana”. Not only did my daughter get free treatment but our travel and conveyance expenses were covered too. Had I gone to a private doctor or a hospital, I would have ended up spending not less than Rs. 10000/-. My daughter has been cured fully. What else one father wants?”

In a country, where it is almost a norm that a beneficiary of a government scheme returns empty handed more often than not, Kaushikbhai’s successful “encounter” with the RSBY must not only be noted but be well propagated too.

Reshma was admitted to Smt. Shushilaben Kothari Hospital at Vasna, it is nearby main bust stop and not much far away from Virmgam. Reshma was treated under septoplasty + Functional Endoscopic Sinus. They are happy with the hospital services. They are feeling very secure and satisfied with this scheme.
